A group of fourth semester students of the Industrial Design program of Universidad Autónoma de Occidente donated 10 didactic toolkits of role-playing games designed by them to more than 50 children who visit the Fundamor Foundation’s Children’s Citadel.
An interactive citadel was the project carried out with teachers of Industrial Design and the pedagogical advice of Fundamor. The group of university students under the guidance of Professor Paola Andrea Roa from the Faculty of Engineering designed educational tools for each of the Foundation’s Children’s Citadel stations, such as the fire station, the supermarket, and the restaurant, amongst others.
These tools will allow children from 1 to 5 years old to develop motor skills and teamwork, as well as to work on social skills by bringing them closer to spaces that, due to their socio-economic context, are unfamiliar.
“For me it was important and rewarding to see the result and the happiness of the children when receiving the objects. It’s great to put what we’ve learned so far at the service of the community. Seeing the results is really fulfilling as a person and as a student,» said Andrés Martínez, a fifth semester student in the Industrial Design program.
This Service-Learning pedagogical project carried out in Fundamor consisted on identifying the needs of the less favored communities of Cali and satisfying them by designing, producing and donating objects, thus improving the life quality of the social environment and putting at the service of the community the skills acquired in the Faculty of Engineering of the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente in Cali, Colombia.
«The project was nourishing for the students’ learning process, but also for my essence as a teacher, since I live and feel Industrial Design as a tool for social Transformation,» concluded Paola Andrea Roa, professor of Industrial Design at the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente.
